Nowadays, people can live and work in anywhere, because of the improved communication technology and transport. Do you think its advantages outweigh its disadvantages?

那么，由于技術(shù)的改進(jìn)，我們現(xiàn)在可以選擇在任何地方工作和生活，這是什么意思呢？

 

如果不清楚，我們只要想一想：以前，我們一定要去單位上班，因為只有通過面對面交流才能工作，而且交通也不發(fā)達(dá)，因此，我們只能選擇住在單位附近的地方。而現(xiàn)在呢，我們的通訊技術(shù)完全可以讓我們不用去單位上班了，即使要去單位上班，發(fā)達(dá)的交通也可以讓我們選擇住在離單位比較遠(yuǎn)的地方。那么有了這種自由度的好處有哪些呢？

 

不必去單位上班，可以減少通勤時間，因此可以減輕交通壓力；而不必住在單位附近，我們不僅可以選擇更便宜的地方居住，從而減輕經(jīng)濟(jì)壓力，而且還可以選擇自己最喜歡的地方居住，心情愉快。

 

但是，這種自由度也不可避免地帶來一些壞處：

在家工作往往因為各種干擾而效率不高，同時因為不住單位附近，與領(lǐng)導(dǎo)同事的面對面交流機(jī)會可能大量減少，從而導(dǎo)致很多業(yè)務(wù)機(jī)會和晉升機(jī)會的失去。比較一下，似乎好處還是大于壞處，因為和同事的交流可以通過其他方式來解決，而可以選擇上班的方式和居住的地點帶來的自由度則是用其他方式無法獲得的。

Years ago, we had to live close to where we worked, for we had to travel to and from work by taking the slow-moving buses or riding bicycles. Now, owing to the advanced communication technology and transport system, we seem to have much more flexibility in choosing where to live and work. Many people, for instance, choose to live somewhere far away from their office because they can work at home by using computers and, when they do have to show up in their office, they can get there in time, thanks to the conveniences offered by the high way and metro services.

 

很多年前，我們得住在離上班很近的地方，因為我們必須乘坐緩慢的公共汽車或騎自行車上下班。現(xiàn)在，由于先進(jìn)的通信技術(shù)和交通系統(tǒng)，我們似乎有更多的靈活性選擇在哪里居住和工作。例如，很多人選擇住在離辦公室很遠(yuǎn)的地方，因為他們可以用電腦在家里工作，當(dāng)他們必須要出現(xiàn)在辦公室，由于有方便的高速公路和地鐵服務(wù)，他們也能及時達(dá)到那里。

This newly found flexibility has both advantages and disadvantages. When it is no longer necessary for people to travel to work, they can save a lot of commuting time and the rush-hour traffic problem can also be lessened. At the same time, when they are given the freedom to live wherever they like, people may choose to live in a place which is less expensive and more peaceful. This will reduce people’s financial pressure and help solve the housing problem in big cities. However, living far away from their office and working at home is not without disadvantages. People who work at home often find they become less efficient because they have more distractions and less peer pressure and living far away from office means less opportunity to have face-to-face interactions with their colleagues and superiors, which may result in the loss of business and even chances of promotion.

 

這一新近獲得的靈活性有優(yōu)點和缺點。當(dāng)人們不再需要去上班時，他們可以節(jié)省大量的通勤時間，而且高峰時間的交通問題也可以減輕。同時，當(dāng)人們有選擇住哪里的自由時，他們可以選擇生活在一個更便宜、更安靜的地方，這將減少他們的經(jīng)濟(jì)負(fù)擔(dān)，也有助于解決大城市的住房問題。然而，住在遠(yuǎn)離辦公室的地方并在家里工作也不是沒有缺點。在家工作的人經(jīng)常發(fā)現(xiàn)他們變得不那么有效率，因為分心更多，而同事壓力變少了，而住在離辦公室很遠(yuǎn)的地方意味著他們與同事們和上級的面對面交流的機(jī)會減少，這會導(dǎo)致業(yè)務(wù)受損，甚至喪失晉升的機(jī)會。

If we compare the merits and demerits of living far away from office and working at home, we will find the problems such as reduced work efficiency and less communication with colleagues can be rather easily overcome, but the precious freedom to choose where to work and live is much harder to come by. My conclusion, then, is that people should be given the right to choose where to work and live, especially when the new technology and transport have already made this possible.

 

如果我們比較遠(yuǎn)離辦公室和在家工作生活的優(yōu)點和缺點，我們會發(fā)現(xiàn)，工作效率降低，與同事溝通少的問題，可以比較容易克服，但要得到在哪里工作和居住的寶貴自由卻難得多。因此，我的結(jié)論是，人們應(yīng)該有權(quán)選擇在哪里工作和居住，尤其是當(dāng)新技術(shù)和交通已經(jīng)使這成為了可能。
