Nowadays, modern communication technologies such as email, twitter, we-chat and facebook have dominated our life in such a way that we no longer need to write letters or make phone calls. However, people have mixed opinions concerning the benefits of these communication technologies.

This is indeed true. As we have seen, for example, it is these new technologies that have made the multi-national management possible. In another case, a patient in urgent need of a kidney transplant twittered his condition and in less than one hour, he received more than one thousand responses from all over the globe. All this was unimaginable in the past.

Yet modern communication technologies can be negative in some ways. While some people may find it a good thing that they can avoid face-to-face communication by sending digital pictures or videos, this lack of face-to-face exchange may actually impair our ability to properly express our personal feelings or opinions. The heavy dependence on the digital communication technologies, for instance, may result in our failure to understand other people’s facial expression and other body language, which in turn may lead to the failure of the communication. In addition, without much personal warmth, this technology-based communication creates distances among people and makes them care less about each other, turning this world into a much colder place.

In my opinion, modern digital means of communication are certainly a positive development because they can help to solve many of our problems. What remains to be done is that we make the best use of them and reduce the risks they may involve.
