In many cities, planners tend to arrange shops, schools, offices, and homes in specific areas and separate them from each other. Do you think the advantages of this policy outweigh the disadvantages?
Introduction
To better residents’ living environment, many municipal governments tend to divide the city into several areas according to diverse functions, such as commercial, educational, industrial and residential activities. Personally, I deem this policy as quite short-sighted.
? municipal adj.
Body 1
Planning the city based on functions does have some edges. To commence, such a policy can create a sound living environment and therefore improve residents’ life quality. This can especially be demonstrated by the relocation of factories to the outskirts. Once the industrial zone is moved to the countryside, which is far from the housing areas, residents can thus be less impacted by noise and air pollution that most factories produce. / Besides, this policy can to some extent bring certain convenience to citizens, especially newcomers or those directionally-challenged ones, since it is much easier for them to navigate. For instance, if one wants to do some shopping, the only thing he or she needs to do is to head directly towards the commercial district and then spend a few hours comparing goods and prices in shopping malls there.
? edge n.
? demonstrate vt. 證明
? impact vt. 影響
? directionally-challenged adj.
? navigate vt./ vi.
Body 2
However, the detriments that this policy has must not be overlooked. The most distinct one is that this kind of city planning can actually inconvenience residents. To illustrate, separating those districts with a certain function means a much longer commuting distance if individuals wish to do more than one specific task a day, such as picking up their children from the school after work and then going shopping for some ingredients for dinner. Another problem is that there may be more traffic congestion, especially from the residential area to the office district during the rush hour, as people are very likely to have similar lifestyles and daily schedules.
? overlook vt.
? inconvenience vt.
Conclusion
In light of the above, industrial zones should be designed together far from the residential areas, but amenities like shops, schools, and hospitals should be planned adjacent to each housing district.
? amenities n.
? adjacent to adj.
